Dr. Myra Cox, Superintendent of Elkin City Schools, will be leading the Yadkin
Valley United Fund as their new President for the year beginning June 1, 2022.
Dr. Cox graduated from Surry Central High School, received an associate’s degree
from Surry Community College, undergraduate degree from Winston-Salem State
University, master’s degree from Appalachian State University, and doctorate
from High Point University. She has been serving the Elkin City Schools as
superintendent since December, 2016.
The 2022-23 board will have three new members, Alfreda Abrams (HCMH/Sodexo),
Rayna Ortiz (The Mango Peel) and T J Bledsoe (Life Store). The other board members
are Denny Lazar (Elkin Vine Line), Mike Bovender (Surry Maintenance), Natalie Eidson
(G & B Energy), Thomas Flippin ((Flippin Law), Kim Carter (Frontier Natural Gas), Anita
Darnell (Quality Inn), Karen Gentry (Slighty Askew), Jordan Mosley (HCMH), Matthew
Schrum (Evergreen Estate Law), Coad Westra (PVH), Aaron Misenheimer (Edward Jones),
John Wiles (US Fertility), Wendy Wood (SYEMC), and Warren Bates (HCMH/Sodexo).
David Steelman will serve again as the Executive Director for the 2023 campaign.
The YVUF has awarded 24 grants to Yadkin Valley non-profits who serve the citizens in
the communities of Elkin, Jonesville, Mountain Park, Ronda, State Road, Thurmond,
and Traphill. The YVUF also provides at least one scholarship each to a senior at
East Wilkes, Elkin, and Starmount High Schools who are heavily involved in community
The goal for the 2023 campaign has once again been set at $200,000 same as last year.
The annual appreciation kickoff event will be Thursday, August 4 at the Barn at Wall’s
Pond to honor and recognize our $600+ donors, all past presidents and past board
members, current board members, our 24 non-profits receiving grants for 2023, our
four scholarship winners, and businesses who allow and promote payroll deduction.
